An Aside I

It worth noting that psychologists have found that adolescence has been—in many people in our modern era—extended into a person’s twenties and thirties. It is therefore not coincidental that, given the above development, that people return to their faith in this modern era in their late thirties and forties.

An Aside II

For Freud—because of his negative view of the role of “illusion” in childhood and adolescence development—religious belief was seen as contrary to or a distortion of reality. Modern psychoanalysis has shown quite the opposite. Proper psychological development requires religiosity. It is religious belief which nourishes and directs healthy human development. It is religious belief that fosters creativity, spontaneity and imagination, which creates, shapes, and transforms life with a sense of purpose and meaning and a sense of self and destiny.
